Prenatal Massage in Manalapan, NJ: What Changes Through Each Trimester
Pregnancy changes how your body carries load, and it changes how massage should be done. Here is how certified prenatal work adjusts from the second trimester through postpartum.
Prenatal massage has its own certification because pregnancy changes almost everything about how a session should go: how you lie on the table, how much pressure is appropriate, and which areas we avoid. I'm certified in prenatal and postnatal massage and see expectant clients in their second and third trimesters, and again after delivery.
Before your first session
Check with your OB or midwife that massage is fine for you, especially if your pregnancy is high-risk or you've been told to limit activity. Tell me at intake about any swelling, high blood pressure, or pain that came on suddenly. Those are signs to call your provider, not to book a massage.
Second trimester
This is when most of my prenatal clients start. Your center of gravity is shifting forward, your low back is working harder to keep you upright, and the muscles around your hips and pelvis are adapting quickly.
Sessions focus on:
- Low back and glute tension from the change in posture
- Hip and SI-joint discomfort
- Upper back and neck tension
We use a side-lying setup with bolsters rather than lying face down on a pregnancy cushion. It's gentler on the lower spine and lets you stay comfortable for the whole session.
Third trimester
Comfort becomes the main goal. Sleep is harder, sciatic-type pain down the back of the leg is common, and your legs may feel heavy by evening. Pressure stays moderate. We spend more time on the hips, glutes and legs, using positions that keep weight off your back and belly.
Postpartum
After delivery, and once your provider has cleared you, the work shifts to the neck, shoulders and upper back that carry the strain of feeding and lifting, and to the hips and low back as your body readjusts. Many clients find a session the first hour in weeks that belongs only to them.
What a session looks like
Every prenatal massage starts with a check-in on how you're feeling that week. Pregnancy changes fast, so last month's plan may not fit today. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, and you can change position or take a break whenever you need to.
The Manalapan studio is at 198 Route 9 North, Suite 100, and serves expectant parents from Freehold, Marlboro, Old Bridge and across Monmouth County. We also offer prenatal massage at the Staten Island studio. Request an appointment or call (732) 617-9999.
Common questions

No. Sessions use a side-lying position with bolsters, which is more comfortable and gentler on the lower back than lying face down on a pregnancy cushion.
Yes. Once your provider has cleared you, postpartum sessions focus on neck, shoulder and upper back strain from feeding and lifting, and on the hips and low back.
